The Health Benefits of CBD
If you don’t know much about CBD, it is not marijuana or THC. CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is one of 113 compounds found in cannabis and hemp plants. Both THC and CBD have nearly-identical chemical makeups but CBD is not psychoactive, so those using it don’t experience the “high” associated with pot.
And while the legal status of marijuana and THC are in flux, as more and more states (led by Colorado) legalize both medical and recreational use, the FDA has not banned the sale or use of CBD as long as it’s not marijuana-derived, making it widely available throughout the United States. (Since most CBD is derived from hemp flowers and stems, many vendors refer to it as hemp oil or hemp extract to avoid any legal issues that may develop. But actual hemp seed oil doesn’t contain high levels of CBD, so be careful what you’re buying.)
Both THC and CBD are cannabinoids, substances which interact specifically with cannabinoid receptors in the human brain and body. That’s an important fact because the interaction allows both compounds to provide important medical benefits, including pain relief. CBD does so, though, without causing the temporary cognitive changes usually caused by ingesting THC.
The medical benefits of marijuana have been discussed widely over the last few years, although solid scientific research for many of the claimed advantages is somewhat scanty. But most of the same benefits can be experienced by consuming CBD.
CBD can provide noticeable pain relief: Cannabinoid receptors interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is involved in the reduction of inflammation in the body and regulating important functions and reactions like immunity, sleep, and pain. Widely-varying types of pain caused by serious medical conditions like cancer and arthritis, and chronic medical conditions like migraine and fibromyalgia, respond positively to the introduction of CBD into the body.
CBD can relieve stress and anxiety: It’s an effective alternative for those who use prescription medication for depression and anxiety, in conjunction with a doctor’s advice.
CBD may help those with neurological diseases: Tests have been positive for the use of CBD to treat patients with diseases like multiple sclerosis and epilepsy.
CBD is being tested, with positive initial results, for other medical issues: Research indicates that high blood pressure, heart disease, serious mental disorders like schizophrenia, diabetes, and even cancer may respond well to treatment with CBD.
